Coniston water is a 5 mile long ribbon lake in the Lake District, a few miles to the west of the larger Lake Windermere. The lake has several Bronze Age settlements on it's shores and along with Windermere, it's also famous for being the inspiration behind Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" novel and for various waterspeed records recorded on the Lake by Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald Campbell. The challenge starts at the South end of the lake next to High Nibthwaite and finishes at the North end, close to the village of Coniston.
