The Bristol Channel begins where the Severn Estuary ends, around Flat Holm Island, between the seaside towns of Penarth and Weston-Super-Mare. It was this route that was first conquered by 21 year old Kathleen Thomas, who defied doubters by being the first person to swim the crossing in 1921. Two years later, she was emulated by schoolgirl Edith Parnell who completed the swim at the tender age of 16! The route is approximately 11 miles but when you add in the strong tidal currents, Thomas and Parnell probably swam the equivalent of around 22 miles, both becoming overnight celebrities in the process. Can you complete the challenge? You'll start at Penarth Head, close to the Marina, passing the East coast of Flat Holm Island (pictured) before finishing on the beach at Weston-super-Mare.
