At 4 miles long and 3/4 of a mile wide, Bassenthwaite is one of the larger lakes in the Lake District, but also one of the shallowest. Unlike many of the other lakes, it doesn't have any major settlements on it's shores, so other than a few sailing boats you won't see much activity compared to some of the busier lakes in the area. Your swim will start at the South end of the lake and you'll swim just over 6.3km to the North End, where the lake drains into the River Derwent.
