The Wastwater is a perfect example of an "over-deepened valley". It was formed by glacial ice during the last ice age and at 258 ft (79m), it is the deepest lake in England despite only being just over 3 miles long and is surrounded by the mountains, Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain. The lakeside is fairly unspoiled so other than the mountains, there aren't too many landmarks on the way. Your swim starts at the south end and you'll head North West, swimming towards Scafell Pike until you reach the other end.
