Audience: Bury Council
Our next SWIMTAG challenge is a local one. We're swimming the River Irwell from the centre of Bury to the centre of Manchester. The route is 32km and we're giving you two months to complete the challenge! You'll start by the bridge close to Castle Leisure Centre and finish at the Museum of Science and Industry. Good luck! The River Irwell’s source comes from Irwell Springs on Deerplay Moor and the River runs for approximately 39 miles before flowing into the River Mersey at Irlam. Following a clean up in the latter half of the 20th Century, the River is once again home to a vast array of wildlife, much of which disappeared during the Industrial Revolution, when hundreds of factories and mills were built close to the River’s edge. This 20 mile/32km challenge begins in Bury town centre. You’ll follow the River downstream through the boroughs of Radcliffe, Kersley, Clifton, Prestwich and Pendlebury before heading into central Manchester, finishing up at the Museum of Science of Industry.
