Haweswater Reservoir is the fourth longest body of water in the Lake District. It was originally a lake of around 4km in length but a dam was built between 1929-1935 bringing it to it's current size and flooding two small villages. The dam was the first ever hollow buttress dam and was considered the forefront of engineering at the time. In the summer of 2018 the lake shrunk in size dramatically after a 3 month heatwave and some of the ruins of the village of Mardale Green were exposed for the first time in years. The area around the lake is fairly undeveloped with few landmarks. Your swim starts at the south end. You'll pass by the small unnamed island and the Haweswater Hotel, finishing at the north end.
